Hanoi's Hidden Food Treasure - Flan

Updated: Jun 28, 2023

Who knew Hanoi was a literal hotbed of yummy Flan, or Caramen as they call it in Vietnam? The name of this delicate dessert is derived from caramel of course, the main flavor ingredient. No where serves it better, or is more visited by the locals than Duong Hoa. Their shop sits about a 15 minute walk due north from the main traffic circle at the top of Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi's Old Quarter. Hoofing it up to their shop is a good way to see some local life, as well as do a little calorie pre-burn. This is important.. because it's nearly impossible to have just one serving of their mouth watering Flan.

Family owned and operated, you will always find one of the owners sitting near the front entrance handling the money and making sure their staff is properly taking care of business. The decor at Duong Hoa is typical for Vietnam street-fair.. tiny stools double as chairs and tables that provide you with a simple, yet charming atmosphere. Regardless of the size of the throne, to the surroundings, you can't help but fee like a 14th century king when you sink your teeth into this ancient Roman delicacy.

Duong Hoa also serves a number of other excellent desserts, notably their coconut ice cream, sweet rice with yogurt and plain yogurt. If you don't get up to see them, you are missing out on one of the hidden local food treasures in Hanoi.
